Leatherman has become synonymous with the multi-tool in the same way that Biro has with the ballpoint pen. There’s no doubt that the Oregon-based company knows how to make a quality tool and for this test we’ve been trying out the all-new Rev, a 13-component multi-tool that’s covered by Leatherman’s reassuring 25-year warranty. It’s impressive that Leatherman has managed to fit 13 well-made components into such a slim, ergonomic tool and as soon as you pick it up the quality is easy to feel.

The majority of the tools on the Rev are accessible only from the inside, though the sharp and well-made knife can be opened from the outside and locks into place. The Rev opens exceptionally smoothly and the tool sits perfectly in your hands when you want to use the pliers. Elsewhere you get a useful pocket clip, a dedicated package opener (which feels like a bit of a waste – I tend to end up using the knife), a ruler, a can opener, a bottle opener, a file and two screwdrivers. But it lacks a serrated blade, so if you want something for cutting up small bits of fire wood you may want to look elsewhere.
