The Redburn Low GTX is a hiking shoe that’s been designed for low-level hill walks or trips where you plan to do a bit of scrambling. The upper is made from a combination of suede, rubber and mesh, and there’s a Gore-Tex lining to help keep the wet stuff out if you’re caught in bad weather.

The sole features Mammut’s Gripex technology and is designed to provide the wearer with specific areas of grip for specific uses. For example, the toe of the sole features a smooth ‘climbing area’ which provides grip if you need to edge on rocks. The term ‘jack of all trades, master of none’ comes to mind though, and while it’s great to have OK performance in all areas, it doesn’t stand out in one particular underfoot condition. But that’s fine if you plan to hike on a variety of terrains.

In terms of stability and support, the Redburn’s midsole provides moderate stiffness, but there’s enough give to make the shoe comfortable to wear throughout the day. A fairly solid heel cup and toe cap help keep the foot in place and provide protection. A large rubber rand wraps around the toes to provide abrasion resistance when walking in rocky terrain.

All in all the Redburn Low GTX is a good, solid hiking shoe. It’s comfortable over long periods, there’s good stability for rougher trails and the sole provides grip in most conditions.

In a line: A good, solid hiking shoe
