Stretching for roughly 2,200 miles, the Appalachian National Scenic Trail is one of the most popular long-distance hikes in America.

At least two million people are thought to step foot on the track every year taking on a part of the trail in some capacity. A small fraction of those (roughly 2,700 people in 2014) will hike the length in its entirety.

The route sees thru-hikers (those completing the entire trail) travel through 14 different states taking in a variety of terrain including incredible forests and pristine alpine meadows.

Along the way, people can expect to see black bears, deer and snakes to name but a few.

The entire walk itself tends to take between five and seven months, but if you don’t have that long you can see some of the highlights in the brilliant video below.
